Rearranging The Deck Chairs On The Titanic
We all know what this expression means — and our leaders are doing it while we watch.
We’re all passengers on a planet heading towards imminent danger: human induced climate change coupled with the collapse of a ravaged environment.
Unlike the Titanic, the planet is not going to sink on impact, but it is highly likely to become uninhabitable for humans — meaning a lot of passengers will perish following impact.
We’ve known about the danger since at least the 1970s, when scientists started raising the alarm.
We know we have to stop pumping carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere. We know we have to stop contaminating groundwater and dumping plastics into the oceans. We know we have to stop cutting down rainforests.
Collectively, we know what to do to avert disaster. We even have the technologies required. Problem is, though, we’re not acting anywhere near fast enough and we waited too long before starting to do anything.
No matter how you look at it, our ship is not going to avoid hitting that looming iceberg our leaders are so desperately ignoring, unless we take drastic action now.
